Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. As the sun rose this morning it shone on a frosty world. It is a bright clear day today, and once it starts to warm will be a pretty day to be out in the mountains.
Cold overnight temperatures cause the water temperatures to fall drastically. Yesterday morning the river was 55F and this morning it is 45F. This is going to make for some slow to difficult fishing today. Rain friday night brought water levels up but they are back down already. The gauge on Little River is giving a reading of 1.89 feet or 173 c.f.s. This is still below the daily normal of 315 c.f.s.
Nymph patterns with plenty of weight are going to be the best choice this morning. Get those flies down to the bottom where the sluggish trout will be holding. As the day warms start looking for some top water action. Anglers have been having success with Quill Gordon's, Blue Quill, Parachute Adams and other darker mayfly patterns. Quill Gordon Wet flies and other traditional wet fly patterns work well this time of year also.
Fishing yesterday was a bit slower than it has been. Air temperatures and water temperatures were falling all day. Fishing early in the day today is going to be tough. It should improve as the day continues. Try lower elevation streams and look for sunnier parts of the river.
Dan Munger and Brandon Bailes were here yesterday for Fly Tying Demos. It is always a fun time to get to see them tie. Brandon does amazing spun deer hair bugs. If you use Instagram check him out @panther_branch_bugs . Next Saturday is our LAST Free Fly Tying Demo this Winter. Walter Babb will be here from 10am till 2pm. He got snowed out back in January. Stop by even if you don't tie flies.
Spring is coming very fast. The weather has been making it feel like it is already here. We are trying to get the store stocked up fast. I ordered hats last week. There will be some new styles so keep an eye out for them. On Friday I talked to Korkers and they have the Hatchback boots in stock. They should be here in a couple of weeks. Cliff Boxes arrived on Friday also. These boxes are made in the USA and are perfect for flies of all sizes but especially for streamers and warmwater flies and poppers.
The Fly Tying Department is in really good shape right now. We finally got an order in from Whiting Farms. I ordered it back at the first of February but they must have lost the order or something because it took them almost a month to get it here. We don't have the tying materials listed on the Online Catalog but if there is anything you need just give us a call. We mail out fly tying materials all the time. And remember....Ground Shipping is FREE.
Today is going to be hardcore paperwork day for me today. Putting it off doesn't seem to do any good. All it does is make the pile taller and less stable.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
