Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is an beautiful Spring day in the Smokies. Wildflowers are blooming and bugs are hatching. It is time to head to the mountains.
The weather forecast for this weekend is perfect for being outside. Highs in the upper 70's and lows in the 50's. Rain is returning early next week. We are about in inch behind on the annual rainfall. Official rainfall numbers can be misleading, especially later in the year. We have had several years when we were way above normal on the report but the streams were drying up. This was a result of heavy rains early in the year and then long dry spells. I would much rather have smaller rain amounts more consistently through the year.
Water conditions in the Smokies are very near perfect right now. The streamflow gauge is giving a reading of 2.21 feet or 279 c.f.s. The daily average is 279 c.f.s. Water temperature is about 55F. Temperatures have been very consistent over the last couple of days which the trout like.
We have been hearing some very good fishing reports from the Smokies. Guide, Rob Fightmaster of Fightmaster Fly Fising, says he is seeing a lot of bugs and the trout are eating them well. Buddy Randolph has been having a very good trip. He has been finding trout hanging in the pocket water. One of our instructors, Chuck Kline, hit the stream after work on Wednesday. He did well and found fish in the pools. I think the conclusion to draw is fish everywhere.
Dry fly patterns have been working well in the Smokies. We are seeing Hendricksons, March Browns even a few Yellow Sallies already. Smoky Mountain Candy is another one that you may not have in your box that is working well. We don't have them added to the online catalog yet as they are brand new but you can give us a call to order them.
Like Byron was saying there is a lot of new product coming into the Shop right now. We have Regal Vises, Fishpond Chaco Sandals, new hat designs, Ross Evolution R reels and I'm about to order Tenkara USA today. It is a great Spring for new gear. Keep an eye on the Newsletter for into on all this new stuff.
The Shop has been crowded with folks this morning. Everyone is excited to be out on the river. We are here till 6pm today.....9am till 6pm on Saturday...and this Sunday only we will be CLOSED for Easter. Monday we'll be back at 9am.
If I was able to go fishing today I would go to my favorite spot. I don't think it matters where that favorite spot is because everywhere seems to be fishing good. If I had all day tomorrow to fish I would probably put in the extra time driving and head to the Oconoluftee River on the North Carolina side of the Park. You are likely to find fewer anglers over there.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
