Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The best way to describe this morning is blustery. Winds are high as a front rolls across East Tennessee. By early afternoon the storms are supposed to have passed.
Water levels are still dropping and are currently at 2.27 feet or 303 c.f.s. This is just a bit higher than the daily normal of 232 c.f.s. and is an excellent level for fishing. Water temperatures are still a warm 63.5 F in the low elevations. We are going to see a cooling trend begin mid-week which should help water temperatures come down a little.
Fishing was good in the Smokies this past weekend. Anglers were doing well on a variety of dry fly patterns including Smoky Mountain Candy, Neversink Caddis, Cahills, etc. Elk Hair caddis are working well also. Nymph patterns such as Pheasant Tails and Prince nymphs are good. We are fast approaching Green Weenie time. These little chartreuse jewels make great dropper flies since they are so light.
The tailwaters around the area are running a lot of water. Norris (the Clinch River) only shows 1 generator but you have to also look at the Average Hourly Discharge. That number is 15,000 c.f.s. There is a tiny note at the top of the page saying they are Spilling until further notice.
Just on a quick glance, the only tailwater with a workable flow looks like the Hiwassee River. When you are looking at the TVA page for Hiwassee it is Apalachia Dam that controls the water where you will be fishing.
Today has been quieter here in the Shop. That is welcome to let us get caught back up. Mondays are always a big paperwork day for me. I have lots of re-orders to place. Time for more Chota boots, Fishpond and of course strike indicators.
I better get going on all that so we'll be ready for next weekend. Have a great early to mid-May and thank you for being here with us.
