Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a beautiful day here in the Smokies. Much nicer than what we have seen over the last several days. Today is going to be sunny and in the low 70's. Perfect for adventuring in the mountains.
Water levels are in good shape right now. The stream flow gauge is giving a reading of 2.5 feet or 406 c.f.s. This is higher than the daily normal of 238 c.f.s. Water temperatures are still a cool 50F. I would be wearing waders if I was going.
The tailwaters are still blown out. The Clinch is still spilling until further notice. We heard rumors that TVA isn't expecting to stop that till possibly June. The only tailwater that looks like it could be fishable at times is the South Holston. Always check with the webpage or phone number before making the drive.
Josh Pfeiffer is taking advantage of higher waters to float for smallmouth on the lower stretches of the Little River. Floating the Little River is a treat. He needs the right water conditions to make it work. Smallmouth fishing around the area is picking up. I imagine the cold temperatures of the last several days probably didn't help much but things are warming this week.
Most all the Roads in the Park are open today. US 441/Newfound Gap Road is open but they are still saying to watch for snow and ice. Little River is finally open again. It was closed all weekend due to tree debris from high winds. Laurel Creek Road, Tremont Road and Cades Cove Loop Road are also open. Right now it sounds like the only road that remains closed due to storm damage is Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail.
If you are heading to the Smokies to fish today you will have a lot of good choices. Water levels are still a bit on the high side so not all parts of the stream will be ideal. Fishing has been good up Lynn Camp Prong and also along the gravel section of Tremont Road. West Prong of Little River fished very well for Rob Fightmaster's students in yesterday's Onstream Class. The Little River up at Elkmont was good for Josh Pfeiffer's students.
WIth the cool water temperatures I would start the day fishing a nymph. A Prince Nymph or Hares Ear sunk deep should produce. As the day warms the dry fly action will pick up. Parachute Adams, Smoky Mountain Candies, Rob's Hellbenders, Elk Hair Caddis and all of the Yellow Sally patterns are good. Sizes ranging from #12 - #16. Maybe look for the sunny spots this morning where the water will be slightly warmer.
Thanks for reading the Fishing Report and thank you for being here with us.
