Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. Sorry the late report. The computers have risen up in rebellion. First they weren't wanting to connect to the internet....then when I went to restart them I got the dreaded...UPDATING. After waiting with my laptop on the Updates Occuring do not unplug or turn off...for about 15 minutes I rolled the dice and killed the power. Thankfully it restarted and took care of its updates. All seems to be working now so onto the Fishing Report!
The weather is very nice in Townsend this morning. The sun is shining and the forecast is for a pleasant 80F. Rain is coming late in the evening and tomorrow. Hopefully it is just enough to maintain flows without flooding anything out.
The stream conditions on the Little River are pretty close to ideal right now. The gauge is giving a reading of 2.20 feet or 275 c.f.s. This is a bit above the daily normal of 233 c.f.s. Water temperatures are a very comfortable 59.4F. The streams are flowing clear.
WBIR ran a story yesterday saying the the have closed the spillway gates at Norris Dam after several weeks. You can see the story HERE. This is good news for Clinch River fisherman. According to the TVA site for Norris Dam it still says "Norris will be sluicing until further notice." Is there a difference between spilling and sluicing? It doesn't look like much difference when you see the numbers for the Average Hourly Discharge. That number is still almost 10,000. I guess it is a bit premature to be dusting off the midge boxes.
Fishing in the Smokies continues to be very good. We have had a bright moon and clear skies over the last couple of nights. I think that slows the fishing some. The trout must feed during the night and seem to be slower at hitting the next day.
Dry fly patterns have been working well. I would try one of the various Yellow Sally patterns, especially in the afternoon. We have quite a few different dry flies that imitate the Yellow Sally which is a small, bright yellow stonefly. The Neversink Caddis, Yellow Stimulator, Yellow Sally, Little Yellow Stonely, and Rob's Hellbender all are Yellow Sally patterns. Other things work well also including yellow Elk Hair Caddis. Light colored mayflies such as Light Cahill and Sulphurs are good too. Sizes are ranging from #12 - #16.
I better wrap this up and get to processing orders and checking in boxes of stuff. If you head up to the mountains have a fun time. Thanks for reading the Fishing Report and thank you for being here with us.
