Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. Gray, misty clouds are hanging low in the valley this morning. The forecast is calling for the clouds to break up leaving us with a pretty weekend.
Rain yesterday didn't hurt water conditions in the Smokies. This morning the Little River gauge is giving a reading of 2.47 feet or 392 c.f.s. This is a little higher than the daily normal of 207 c.f.s. Water temperatures are a good 59.5 F.
The weather forecast for the next week looks perfect. Sunny with high's in the mid-80's, lows in the mid-60's. There isn't rain in the forecast until maybe next Sunday. It sounds like a great time to be out in the mountains.
If you are heading out early today I would start with some nymphs. Bead Head Pheasant Tails or Prince Nymphs in #14 or #16 are good choices. Dropping them below a Stimulator or other high floating dry fly would be even better.
Later in the day, dry flies are the way to go. Smoky Mountain Candy, light colored Elk Hair Caddis, Neversink Caddis and Rob's Hellbenders are doing good right now. If you are fishing them alone I would go with either a #14 or #16.
Anglers have been having good success across the Park. Where you go will depend more on what you want to fish for. If browns are your quarry then the main Little River is your best destination. If you are on the hunt for brookies head to Lynn Camp Prong or Sams Creek. If rainbows are your pleasure...then just about any stretch of uninhabited water will do.
Dave is about to get started with a Fly Fishing 101 class this morning. These are a fun time.
Thanks for reading the Fishing Report and thank you for being here with us.
