Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

If you do not see today’s Fishing Report, please refresh your browser to empty your cache.

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:55 am, the temperature outside is 66.4 degrees.

It rained most of the day yesterday. Total rainfall near our house amounted to 2.13 inches, while the Knoxville Airport only reported .76 inches. Rainfall amounts for yesterday, at locations inside the Park will not be available until about 9:30 am this morning.

There is a 100% chance for more rain today and a good chance tonight, tomorrow and Saturday. We are under a flash flood watch today in most locations in and around Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It will be cool.

Little River is flowing at 678 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.93 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 116 cfs. The water temperature is 64.4 degrees this morning.

Most streams in the Park are flowing much higher than normal. Little Pigeon River’s flow is currently 3,050 cfs, compared to 226 median flow. Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,680 cfs, compared to 264 cfs median flow. Cataloochee Creek’s median flow for today is 53 cfs, but it is currently recording 265 cfs.

The fact that the streams are flowing high, with more rain predicted, and a flash flood watch, fishing will be slow in the Smokies today. Expect more rising and stained water today, and possibly tomorrow through Saturday.

This is not a good immediate forecast for anglers. This is a good long term benefit for anglers. When these streams recede, we should have great stream flows for at least a week or more, in August, which is unusual. With more rain predicted next week, August may turn out to be a great fly fishing month in the mountains.

The chance for rain will be lower Sunday, with only a low chance until next Wednesday. Then, more rain is predicted next week through the weekend.

My buddy Jack and I plan to paint the front of the LRO building next Monday, Tuesday and possibly Wednesday, weather permitting. I trimmed all the trees and shrubbery Sunday. Jack and I cleaned and power washed the front of the store Monday.

We will then paint the wood covered porch. It has been stained with a clear finish at least twice and that usually does not last very long. Our plan now is to change the color of the wood to the off white we use on the wood trim outside.

Our discussions have lead us to this plan for the overhang on the front porch. Clean and power wash the posts, beams, braces and ceiling in the eve before the store opens. Then, we hope to cover the underneath with plastic so paint won’t drip on you.

After that, we can paint in the eve, while customers visit through the front doors, underneath us. We will be on walk boards in the eve, mostly early in the mornings while it is cool. We’ll see how that works out.

Next year, I will find a crew to clean and stain the other sides of the building. That won’t be cheap!

We have new signs on the building and the poles. They look good.

Paula and I are going to take over the landscaping, except for the mowing, which is done professionally, every week.

The parking lot will be sealed and striped this Summer or Fall.

Owning a fly shop, and the building, is like owning a few extra homes.

I have been busy organizing the fly tying department. I am almost done. Now the fun starts, ordering and stocking new merchandise while maintaining the current mix. Quit a bit of new items and replacements showed up yesterday from various vendors. I’ll see all of that today. Daniel and the guys in the shop will receive and stock that today and tomorrow.

I am focusing on finding hackle, and it is in short supply this time of the year. But, I found some pretty necks and saddles from Whiting, Keogh and Metz. More will be coming. Whiting Farms is building 5 new chicken barns. Someone in the customer service department told me that this week. The fly tying department  in our store takes up right at 700 square feet, so there is not much room to expand unless we knock out some walls, which we may do.

Fly Tyers Weekend will be held in October. We’ll have the department in great shape by then.

So, now we wait for the waters to recede.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
