Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:30 am, the temperature outside is 72.8 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a 50% to 80% chance for showers or thunderstorms. The high temperature is predicted to be 84 degrees in Townsend, 80 at Elkmont, 77 at Newfound Gap and 68 degrees at Mount LeConte.
It will be warm to hot this week, with rain predicted today, Thursday and Friday. The chance for rain this weekend is low.
Little River is flowing at 136 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.85 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 109 cfs. The water temperature at the USGS gauge site is 68.9 degrees this morning.
Water temperatures in the lowest elevations will be warm this week. Fishing in the mid to high elevations is recommended. Watch for rising water as thunderstorms are possible.
Terrestrial flies are a good choice, especially beetles and ants for your dry flies and Green Weenies fished below the surface. That will probably be the case for a while. Other fly patterns may work well too. Though the water levels are near normal, the streams are still fairly low. Stealth is important to success. Dress to blend in with the forest. Try not to wade much while fishing. Stay low. Hide behind rocks and trees.
It should be mostly cloudy through Thursday. That is usually good for fishing. Of course we don’t know for sure when or how much rain we will get this week. Fishing will probably be good unless heavy rain stains or raises the stream levels too much temporarily.
A young man is missing. Rangers are searching the southwest section of the Park near Highway 129. He is 18 years old and was reported missing Sunday evening. You can read more on the Daily Times website by CLICKING HERE. We all hope they find him soon.
Daniel, Bill, Dave and I met with Park Burson from Orvis yesterday. We saw the first round of many new products that will be available soon, and learned about others that will be phased in over the next year or longer.
We all were able to cast the new H3 fly rods. They are awesome. They look good too, for many reasons. I especially like the new white branding on the rods. Dana, one of our customer friends called the branding “modern”. He nailed it. It is modern, in a good way. Some models will be available in a couple of weeks. Others will be available in March.
Orvis has developed new wader technology that is 60% more breathable. These waders are stitched differently, for better durability. The colors coordinate with wading boots, wading jackets and vests. They really look good. The wader colors and accents are changing. The new breathable technology is used in the wading jackets.
I really liked the new Mirage fly reel. This reel is light and beautiful. It always was. It’s better now. The Mirage is made in America, at the reel manufacturing facility located in Manchester, Vermont. I think it is owned by Orvis but I’m not sure.
I am guessing, we have been working with Orvis for at least 18 years. I would describe our relationship as “friends” or “partners”, as opposed to “manufacturer/customer”. It has been like that for a long time. Many of the people we have worked with are still there and some have been there since way before we arrived on the scene. Orvis is a great company to be friends and partners with. Yesterday was a fun day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
