Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

If you do not see today’s Fishing Report, please refresh your browser to empty your cache.

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The sky is cloudy this morning but the air is much warmer. Don't get used to it as it is going to get colder as the day goes on.

Fishing in the Smokies continues to be slow. Water levels are on the low side and water temperatures are very cold. This morning the streamflow gauge is reading a water temperature of 39 F. Wet wading is definitely out as an option. The flow gauge is reading 1.82 feet or 139 c.f.s. This is lower than the daily normal of 273 c.f.s.

If you go fishing try nymphs fished very deep. We have a double bead tungsten stonefly pattern that is good for this. It isn't on the website yet but you can give us a call and Dave will ship some out to you. (it is one of his favorite flies). Prince nymphs, Tellico Nymphs, pheasant tails and hares ears are also good choices.

Fishing on the tailwaters could be good if you can catch the flows right. The Clinch looks to be generating all day. South Holtson is turned off all day. The Hiwassee says it is generating one.

Mark from Chota brought us a huge shipment of boots yesterday. Now pretty much everything from Chota is back in stock. There is a new version of Hippies coming out called the Tundra. The Tundra is a stealthy green color but its main new feature is an upgraded fabric. I'm told that it is the same weight as the original but the new fabric is twice as tough. These will be great for the fisherman who are tough on their waders.

If you go fishing today stay warm! There is still plenty of time to get Christmas gifts in time, especially gift cards! Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
