Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:25 am, the temperature is 66.5 degrees.
Thunderstorms swept through areas in the Smokies yesterday and last night. Only a trace of rain fell in Townsend.
It will be mostly sunny and hot today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s, and a chance for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Tomorrow and Thursday will be hotter with highs in the low 90’s and no chance for rain either day.
Little River is flowing at 129 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.72 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 123 cfs. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees at the low elevation gauge. Little River rose quickly late yesterday then receded overnight. The river is now rising again.
Other streams in the Smokies were affected by thunderstorms, including Little Pigeon River which is flowing at 1,070 cfs or 2.95 feet at the Sevierville gauge. Little Pigeon is receding now. Median flow for this date is 298 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing higher than normal at 436 cfs or 1.79 feet, compared to median flow of 276 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing slightly higher than normal at 253 cfs or 1.52 feet.
Cataloochee Creek rose late yesterday but is receding now. Flow is 68.3 cfs, compared to median flow of 59 cfs.
The mountain streams are warm in the low elevations and they will become warmer through the week. Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for daytime high temperatures in the middle 60’s or cooler. Dry flies and nymphs are working. Terrestrial fly imitations are good choices.
Some lowland rivers are flowing near normal while you may find a few, including Little Pigeon, flowing quite high and possibly stained. Fishing will be best early or late when the sun is off the water unless the river you choose has tree canopy and shade. Poppers and foam floating flies should work. If not, switch to streamers or nymphs.
I looked at a few generation schedules in the area. You have wade fishing opportunities in the tailwaters below some dams this morning. You will probably find the turbines discharging later today at most dams. Power demands will be high this week during this heat wave. Visit the TVA website to see what your options are today.
Lake fishing will be best early or late when the sun is off the water. Winds should be calm. Hit the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. Watch for schools of shad being devoured on the surface by game fish when the sun is low. Quietly try to get close enough to cast a threadfin shad pattern into the school. When the wind is calm, this activity is easy to see but the fish will be spooky.
Heat indexes will be very high this week. Drink plenty of water.
