Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is going to be a scorcher today. Thankfully it is cooler in the mountains.
Fishing has been a bit tough due to the weather. Early in the morning and later in the evening will be better times to be out on the the water. Higher elevations are definitely better if you are fishing the mountain streams.
The Little River is flowing at 1.56 feet or 91.8 c.f.s. This is just slightly below the daily normal of 117 c.f.s. Looking back at the historical highs and lows I've noticed how like today the historic low was one year and the historic high was the previous or next year. Nature fluctuates. All we can do is try to deal with it.
Water temperatures are warm everywhere. The stream flow gauge on Little River is reading 70.52 F this morning. Higher elevations will have lower temperatures. The upper elevation streams are generally higher gradient streams which lends to better oxygenation of the water. This makes for better fishing in the warm months.
Terrestrial patterns such as beetles and ants work well this time of year. Find a shaded spot with an overhanging branch and plop the beetle in there. No matter which patterns you fish with now, be it a dry or nymph, you are going to want to concentrate on the faster water. It doesn't matter if it seems too shallow, you will find more fish in the broken water than you will in the big slow pools.
This report is going to be brief so I can get it posted.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
