Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:31 am, the temperature outside is 46.6 degrees. Today will be sunny and warm again, with the high topping out at about 80 degrees. Tonight’s low is predicted to be in the mid-50’s. Warm days and nights, similar to what we have today are predicted through the weekend. There is only a slight chance for rain tomorrow and Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 316 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.30 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 293 cfs. The water temperature is 56.5 degrees this morning and it rose to 61 degrees yesterday.
What we have now are almost normal flows and perfect water temperatures in the low to mid elevations. Stream flows will recede to normal, then lower than normal this weekend.
Go just about anywhere in the Park you choose, and you will find excellent conditions for trout fishing. The higher elevations will be cooler, but fishing there may be very good too. I don’t know. I have not heard.
You will find aquatic insect activity at times. Dry flies should work in most streams at most times during the days today and through the weekend. Nymphs will work too.
Dry fly choices include Parachute Adams, Hendrickson, March Brown, Smoky Mountain Candy, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Stimulators in Black or Yellow and other patterns not listed. Any reasonable nymph should produce. I would use a Bead Head Pheasant Tail, Squirmy Wormy and maybe a Green Weenie. Again, other reasonable nymph patterns should work.
The trout are actively seeking food. Fishing conditions are about as good as they can be. Lower water, like we will have this weekend is the only improvement I can think of. Some anglers like the flows we have now, and others prefer lower water like we have coming soon.
I’ll take what we’ve got and what is coming later this week.
The trout tailwaters are fishing well. The lower tailwaters are producing good smallmouth bass. White bass are running up the rivers from the impoundments. Warmwater species and smallmouth bass should be fairly active in the lowland rivers.
You will have many choices this week and through the weekend. Fishing is good to excellent.
I’m getting ready. My truck is in the shop, preparing for fishing. Our boat is in the shop doing the same. I ordered a card for our chartplotter yesterday, that has lake and ocean maps covering most of North America. Wherever we go with the boat, we can navigate, hopefully without running aground.
I plan to spend the day, here at home, photographing tackle and products for our online store and the new online store we are building. Then, I’m taking off three days. Daniel will write the Fishing Report tomorrow and Saturday. Sunday is Easter, we will be closed and the fishing report will not be written.
Handgun manufacturer SCCY is moving their headquarters and manufacturing facility from Florida to our County. They expect to be operational by early next year. Kathy Johnson, the blonde lady in the middle of the photograph, in the article, is my good friend and one of our bankers. She is a VP who works for CBBC Bank, at the headquarters in downtown Maryville. CBBC is a locally owned community bank. Kim, Debbie, Tammy and Brent, at the Townsend branch, are my buddies. I like to hang out with them often and did it twice yesterday. CBBC is a great bank. Paula and I, and the guys at the shop, are looking forward to the local branch’s hot dog cookout later this month celebrating “Customer Appreciation Day”.
Additionally, Advanced Munitions International is moving its headquarters and manufacturing to our county. They are building a $553 million facility. I know that sounds high. Maybe it’s a misprint. Maybe not. “What’s a couple of hundred million dollars, one way or the other, when you are talking about serious money?”
Daniel and the guys have beefed up our inventory. I was at the shop yesterday and saw a lot of boxes full of fly fishing gear, that had not been opened. The fly tying department is getting a makeover, which includes more new products for you (and me) fly tyers. That department is a high priority this year. I’m happy about that. Our plan is to start selling fly tying materials online, hopefully later this year or maybe early next year.
Not many companies do it in a big way. Why? It’s a huge commitment, financially, managing the inventory and fulfillment. That is a lot of small items in many colors and sizes. Think about all those hooks. I’ll take the photos and write the content. I hope we can get it done. We’ve got a lot going on this year.
I’ll be 66 years old in 3 months. I’m supposed to be winding down. The guys at the shop keep giving me more to do. I don’t see much boredom in my future. I’ll be so busy, I’ll have to order my fly tying materials online, and I live 10 minutes from the shop. I have been known to go in after hours, and get something I need, in a pinch. I pay the shop back later.
