Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. Overcast skies are blanketing Townsend this morning. There is rain in the forecast for this evening but chances are only around 50%. Accumulation amounts are only supposed to be around a quarter of an inch. Light rain will help to maintain the good water levels.
This morning the streamflow gauge on Little River is giving a reading of 2.08 feet or 242 c.f.s. This is a bit lower than the daily normal of 272 c.f.s. The streams are flowing clear. Water levels like this a great for fly fishing in the Smokies.
Water temperatures have been on a steady rise all week and this morning the gauge is reading 61F. We should see a leveling of temps as this next week is going to be slightly cooler than we saw last week. Consistency is the key and the daytime highs and lows are forecast to be the similar each day.
Dry fly patterns have been fishing well in the Smokies. We have been getting mixed reports of what is working. Most anglers are using lighter colors like Light Cahills, Yellow Stoneflies, Yellow Parachute Adams etc. Then others are using other things like Purple Parachute Adams. There are so many different bugs hatching right now that the key is to be flexible and try are variety of flies.
Using a dry / dropper can be a very effective method of fishing. Put a bushy dry like a Smoky Mountain Candy, Yellow Humpy or a Stimulator on then tie a smaller nymph off the bend of the hook.
It is festival weekend here in Townsend. That brings more cars and traffic to town. It shouldn't have more anglers on the water though.
Today is our Nymphing Tactics Class. They are upstairs now learning about nymphing theory, knots, leaders and rigging. After lunch they are going to go to the river and put it to use.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
