Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. It is a sunny and warm morning here at the Shop. The weather forecast is calling for highs in the low 90's today. Hopefully this is just a temporary heat wave. I'm not quite ready for summer yet.
The stream flow gauge on Little River is giving a reading of 1.83 feet or 164 c.f.s. This is lower than the daily normal of 226 c.f.s. The streams are clear. We can't really ask for better water levels than these. They are high enough to be good but low enough that most people feel comfortable with the flows.
Water temperatures have risen over the last several days. This morning the gauge is giving a reading of 63F. Given how warm the air is going to be today wet wading may be the way to go.
Yellow sally patterns have been working well. David Knapp of Troutzone Anglers has been doing well with Neversink Caddis Yellow size #16. This is a great little fly. It floats high and is easy to see. Yellow stimulators is another favorite of mine. The stimulator pattern is heavily hackled which helps it stay on top in the faster pocket water.
Nymph patterns are good to try. You can sink them all the way to the bottom or fish them as a dropper below a dry fly. Green Weenies make an excellent dropper fly this time of year. It is a lightly tied fly which is unweighted. The "Green Weenie" insects are terrestrial but fall out of trees into the water.
There may be some fishing opportunities on the tailwaters today. Clinch is running one most of the day but it looks like they are going to turn it off later. The Holston is running a pulse. From the photos I've seen online the tailwaters look to be fishing well.
The Shop has been pretty quiet this morning. There have been people in and out but nothing crazy. Tomorrow is Mother's Day. Is Mom going to ask to go fishing? Hopefully. We are seeing more and more ladies getting into flyfishing. It is no surprise that women like to fly fishing. One of the first fly fishers was Dame Juliana Berners.
As warm as it is going to be today you may want to look to the higher elevations for some better fishing. Leave the waders in the car, pack some water, and head up to find some brook trout.
Looking at next week's forecast there is rain coming mid week. This will be good to refill the streams. It is too early in the year for things to dry up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
