Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:49 am, the temperature outside is 66.7 degrees.
We got more rain yesterday. 1.23 inches was reported at the Knoxville Airport. Readings at Townsend personal weather stations ranged from .23” to 1.06”.
There is a 50% chance for thunderstorms today and a 60% chance tonight. The high temperature today should only rise to the upper 70’s. Tomorrow and tomorrow night, we are under a flash flood watch as Subtropical Storm Alberto moves into Middle Tennessee. We may be on the outskirts, but heavy rain is possible Tuesday and Wednesday.
Little River is flowing at 507 cubic feet per second or 2.66 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 190 cfs. The water temperature is 63.1 degrees.
Fishing conditions in the Smoky Mountains today, are similar to those anglers found yesterday. The streams are running strong. Some could be stained, like they were yesterday. Some streams may be too high to wade safely. Others may be OK. More rain could occur. Thunderstorms may be present at times.
Like yesterday, this is a tough call for me and you. I did talk to one experienced customer who hiked into Lynn Camp Prong several miles yesterday afternoon. He found clear water and caught brook trout. I talked to another lady, who fished at Elkmont with some of her friends. She said they caught some rainbows and found clear water there. Both reported stained water and plenty of it in the larger rivers.
So, today, like yesterday, I am going to say “fishing is fair”. There is a fair chance fishing will be slow for you. On the other hand, there is a fair chance fishing will be good. That depends on where you fish, and where rain falls today.
Right now, Little River is flowing on the high side, but fishable. Be careful wading. I would probably fish the higher elevations of the East and Middle Prongs. Little Pigeon is flowing high at Sevierville. Oconaluftee and Cataloochee are flowing high. Cataloochee is receding. Tellico River is flowing high.
Conditions could worsen or get better later today, depending on the rain and where you are. Wherever you are, the streams will be flowing strong.
Watch for quickly rising water. A flash flood wall of water could be heading downstream toward you. If that happens, get out!
Don’t take any chances wading in strong current. If you hear thunder, head for the truck.
Appalachian Bear Rescue (ABR) received two new orphaned cubs and a yearling from Louisiana to care for. The cubs will be held for a few months to later be released into the wild. The yearling from Louisiana will be returned there fairly quickly. You can read the story on the Daily Times website by CLICKING HERE.
Today is Memorial Day, the day we honor those who gave their life fighting for our freedom and our Country in all branches of the military. Dying for America is an honor, and honoring those who did is something we should all participate in, in some way. We should all remember what today is really about. Today is for honoring them.
God bless America, and God bless those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Have a great day, be careful out there, and thank you for being here with us.
