Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:58 am, the temperature outside is 62.6 degrees.
Today and tomorrow will be warm, with a chance for thunderstorms each day. The chance for thunderstorms increases greatly on Monday and continues through next Friday.
Little River is flowing at 222 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.02 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 147 cfs. The water temperature is 63.7 degrees this morning.
We heard thunder at our house late yesterday. Two thunderstorms dropped rain in the Little River watershed. The river spiked to almost 2.4 feet, before receding to the current level.
Fishing is very good in the Smokies right now. And that should continue for a while. These thunderstorms, expected over the next week, have the potential to raise stream levels at times, where the storms track. You may also find stained water at times. Or, you may see no change at all. This is a typical weather pattern we see in June. The storms are essential to good fishing over the long term, while causing slow fishing at times, temporarily.
I would use dry or sub-surface flies. My dry fly choices would be Neversink Caddis, Yellow Stimulator, Yellow Elk Hair Caddis or Rob’s Hellbender. A black foam beetle is another good choice. For fishing below the surface, I would pick a Green or Pink Weenie, or a Squrimy Worm.
Really, the trout will hit about anything that looks like food. Good presentation, getting a good drift and stealth are probably more important than your fly choice.
Fish the mid to high elevation streams. If you decide to fish above Elkmont, and park at the Little River trailhead, you need to be gone by 5 pm. The shuttles to the firefly event will begin using that area to turn around in the evenings.
TVA is cutting back on the flows at some dams. Check the TVA website to see if you have an opportunity this weekend to fish your favorite tailwater.
The lakes will be crowded this weekend. Go early or late.
Soon, you will be greeted at the entrance to Townsend, driving from Maryville, by two murals. A muralist is painting them on two large concrete retaining walls near Kinzel Springs. One lane of traffic will be closed on weekdays. They will be open on weekends. You can read the article on the Daily Times website by CLICKING HERE.
You have to see this video. A bear ran across the highway in downtown Gatlinburg and it was filmed by a tourist on a phone. The bear ran right through a mass of people, who were walking through town and crossing the road at a crosswalk. You can see the video and read the story on the WBIR website by CLICKING HERE.
Amazing!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
