Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:32 am, the temperature outside is 66.7 degrees.
Strong to severe thunderstorms moved through the region during the early evening hours yesterday. The Knoxville Airport reported .44” of rain during the past 24 hours. We got .80” near our home in Townsend. Thunderstorms are likely today and tonight, beginning this morning. Some storms may be severe. Thunderstorms are also likely tomorrow.
Little River is flowing at 295 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.22 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 123 cfs. The water temperature is 67.3 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing above normal though none seem to be blown out at this point. The Little Pigeon River is flowing at 536 cfs, compared to median flow of 224 cfs. The Oconaluftee River USGS Gauge is not reporting. Cataloochee Creek rose quickly yesterday, but has receded this morning. Still, the creek is flowing at 104 cfs, compared to a median flow of 63 cfs.
The streams are likely not stained now.
Most streams are fishable this morning. Flows are very good. Fishing should be good. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. If you go, fish the mid to higher elevation streams where the water is cooler.
You should be on the lookout for quickly rising water due to the predicted storms today. Some storms may contain heavy rain, high winds, hail and the potential for flash flooding. If you see rising water or stained water where you are fishing, move to the bank and be prepared to exit the stream.
Fishing may be good today in the Smokies. That all depends on the weather. If you go, try Yellow Sally Stonefly patterns, including Yellow Neversink Caddis, Yellow Stimulators or Rob’s Hellbender. Terrestrials, including black foam beetles are a good choice. Green or Pink Weenies will produce sub-surface. They work well as droppers off your dry fly.
A large area of rain is headed our way. Unless it breaks up before it reaches here, we should see rain and possibly hear thunder in about 30 minutes.
Personally, I would not fish on the lakes today. You might try a tailwater for trout or smallmouth bass. The lowland rivers may be an option today, fishing for smallmouth bass. If you are floating a river, take a rain jacket and hope for the best.
I think Friday will be a good fishing day. It will be partly cloudy with only a slight chance for rain. It will be hot, in the low 90’s. The weekend looks fair right now. The chance for thunderstorms ranges between 40% and 60% both days, depending on which weather website you believe. This time of the year, due to the scattered nature of the daily thunderstorms, it is hard to know what to expect, where to fish, and when.
Get out and fish if you can and stay safe.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
