Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The sun is shining this morning. It is going to be hot today. This weekend is looking to be dry and not too terribly warm.
Water levels in the Smokies are very good. This morning the gauge on Little River is giving a reading of 1.91 feet for 187 c.f.s. The daily normal is 122 c.f.s.
Water temperatures are warming up. The gauge is giving a reading of 68F. You will find cooler temps in the higher elevations. Also, fishing early in the day or later in the evening will be more comfortable. Warm water is harder on the trout so try to land them quick and get them back on their way as soon as possible to reduce the stress they are under.
As water warms it doesn't hold dissolved oxygen as well. Fast broken water is where you want to concentrate. You will find more feeding fish in the fast water. Getting a drift in broken water can be tough. Keep your casts short and as much line off the water. This will help you get a better drift.
Light colored dry flies such as Neversink Caddis, Yellow Stimulator, Rob's Hellbender's. Size ranges from #14 to #16. Terrestrials like beetles and ants are good throughout the day. Don't forget about the Green Weenies and Squirmy worms.
Byron is out smallmouth fishing today. I suspect they will be fishing Knuckleheads and Booglebugs. He and his buddies are floating with Josh Pfeiffer and Gary Troutman of Frontier Anglers. I can't think of two better guys to chase smallmouth with.
ICAST and the IFTD dealer show is going on right now in Orlando Florida. This is the big wholesale fishing show where the manufacturers show off their new products. We don't go down there for it. I just watch Instagram and get to see the highlights, then the manufacturers sales reps come around and show us the items in person. I can't wait to see what Fishpond is going to have. I saw a video of a new wader belt they are coming out with. It looked to have back support and also a built in holster for a net.
If you head out to the river today be sure to bring water and stay hydrated. Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
