Scattered but short lived thunderstorms moved through our area yesterday afternoon. It poured at the shop while I was there. Less rain fell at our house, only .37 inches.

Little River is flowing at 119 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 91 cfs. The water temperature is 68.2 degrees at the low elevation USGS site located just inside the Park at the Townsend entrance.
Most streams in the Park are flowing above median flow for this date. Some were impacted by storms yesterday, but they have receded.
Fish the mid to high elevations where the water is cooler, for the health of the trout you catch and release. Look for water that does not exceed 65 degrees during the day. In our area, I would fish around Elkmont or above, or on Lynn Camp Prong. There are many streams to choose from at those elevations, throughout the Park.
Though most streams got a shot of water yesterday, most are still flowing low, which is normal this time of the year. Stealth is of the utmost importance. Dress to blend with the forest so the trout are less likely to see you.
Dry flies and nymphs should both work. Try a foam beetle, Yellow Stimulator, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Parachute Adams or any yellow sally stonefly pattern for your dry fly. Good sub-surface patterns include Green Weenie or a Bead Head Pheasant Tail.
You may encounter heavy traffic on roads in the Park this holiday weekend. You may also see a lot of swimmers and tubers, especially on the larger rivers, near roads.
Some of the trout and smallmouth tailwaters are fishing well. Give them a try.
Personally, I would not try fishing on the lakes this weekend. They will likely be crowded with recreation boaters. To many people, college football takes priority over fishing and boating so today may not be that crowded. I bet tomorrow and Monday will be.
The lowland rivers may be fishing fair. They are flowing low. I would go early or late. You will probably do best fishing deeper pools for smallmouth bass and rock bass. If the sun is shining brightly on the water, cast to the shaded banks with poppers or streamers.
I am going to spend the next few days, updating our websites with the new Fishpond Gear. The 2019 offerings from Fishpond will not be available for sale until November, but I want to get this job done.
We have one Fishpond dedicated website at fishpondflyfishing.com. And, we have a large Fishpond department on our online store. This work takes several days to complete every year.
I have a new Temple Fork Axiom II, 6-weight fly rod and I love it. That rod is light, forgiving and it shoots line like a gun. The rod is very accurate. Ask to test cast one at the shop. You will be impressed. Read more about the Axiom II fly rods on our online store by CLICKING HERE. I highly recommend these rods. My next one will be a 7-weight.
The shop will be open every day through the holiday weekend. We all hope to see you there.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
