Little River is flowing at 86 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.53 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 86 cfs. The water temperature is 70.7 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing higher this morning, due to rain that fell late last night. Flow is currently 367 cfs or 1.94 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 140 cfs.
Both Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek are flowing above median flow.
So, we have higher than normal flows in some streams, and normal flows in others. There may be very low water in some small tributaries. Normal flow this time of the year is low. We also have very warm water in the low elevations.
Due to these factors, you should consider fishing higher elevation streams where the water is cooler, and do all you can to stay hidden from the trout.
I would rate fishing “fair”, though it may be slow in some streams with very low flows, while being good in others that have more water.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Try a foam beetle, Yellow Neversink Caddis or a Yellow Stimulator for your dry fly. Drop a Green Weenie or Pheasant Tail off the dry. Or, fish nymphs weighted and alone. A pair of nymphs, fished using a “high sticking” technique is a good tactic.
Fish the broken water, where the trout are hiding.
I hoped to fish a lake Friday, but worked instead. I am planning to fish this week, on one or two lakes. The cooler temperatures will make lake fishing more enjoyable. Looking ahead to the next few days, hopefully the water temperatures will fall some. We should have overcast days this week. That is perfect for lake fishing, when trying to catch fish on fly rods, without having to get your fly deep.
Of course, it also looks like we will be dodging thunderstorms over the next few days.
As the temperatures cool, the chance for thunderstorms will be lower, maybe.
Pre-spawn brown trout will be active soon. The females will be looking for the perfect spot for a redd, and the males will be aggressive, even during the day. The fish will be out in the open, where they can be seen.
The days are shorter. The temperatures will be cooler. The leaves will be turning. Fall fly fishing is not far off.
I am really looking forward to Fall this year.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
