Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:44 am, the temperature outside is 69.8 degrees.
We have a mixed bag of weather forecasts this morning, with extremes based on location. Rain is predicted throughout the Park and at all entrance towns. Expect rain today, tonight and tomorrow. We may get about an inch in Townsend. The high elevations, and areas on the east side of the Park may receive two inches or more.
There are wind advisories today in the high elevations and on the east side of the Park. Maggie Valley is under a flash flood watch issued by the National Weather Service.
Some roads in the Smokies have been closed in anticipation of heavy rain and wind.
They are:
Little River Road from Sugarland Visitors Center to Townsend
Cherokee Orchard Road
Laurel Creek Road from the Townsend “Y” to Cades Cove
US Highway 441 Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee
You can track road closures and openings on the Park’s Road Twitter page by CLICKING HERE. I have read about other road closures that are not listed on the Twitter page.

Fishing in the Smoky Mountains today is probably not a good idea. First, several of the major roads are closed. Heavy rain is predicted in the high elevations and on the east side of the Park. There is a chance for flooding. It will be windy in some areas, especially in the higher elevations. And, the water is warm in the low elevations.
Hurricane Florence will move out of our area by tomorrow night.
If you do decide to fish in the Smokies, be mindful of the chance for flash floods. Watch for rising water. If the wind is strong, it is not a good idea to be in the forest. Limbs and trees may fall.
We will start advertising Fly Tyers Weekend this week. This great event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, October 27th and 28th. So far, over forty fly tyers have been scheduled to tie. The event is free, both days.
We will have two tents erected behind the shop. Expect 20 fly tyers to be demonstrating at once, in 4-hour shifts. Demonstrators will be tying at tables. There will be chairs for you to use to watch them tie. You will learn more about the craft of fly tying than you can imagine. You will see flies tied by some of the best tyers who live in the Southeast United States. They will be tying trout, warmwater and saltwater flies all weekend. You will learn and enjoy this experience, even if you are not a fly tyer yourself.
All you have to do is show up. This is usually a beautiful time to be in Townsend and the Great Smoky Mountains. We expect the event to be well attended, as usual. Off site parking will be arranged for you, if needed. Our lot holds 50 vehicles. Our staff will park off site.
Make your reservations now for a cabin, motel, lodge or campground site. October is a busy month in the Smokies.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
