Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 9 am Townsend had fog. The fog will burn off soon and we are supposed to have mostly sunny skies today.
It is going to be warmer today. Rain is in the forecast for the weekend. Chances aren't very high, mostly likely scattered storms.

This morning the gauge on Little River is giving a reading of 2.32 feet or 323 c.f.s. This is quite a bit higher than the daily normal of 70 c.f.s. If you are used to normal late summer fishing then these flows are going to feel high. They are more like the flows we would have in early June.
Water temperatures are a reasonable 65F at the gauge. Further up the river where most anglers fish it will be quite a bit cooler. The weather forecast for late next week is showing highs in the mid 70's and lows in the mid 50's. This is going to cause water temperatures to drop.
We are getting to the time of year where we should all be pulling our waders out of the closet and giving them check. I know a lot of people who limp through the winter or spring with a damp pair of waders till summer. Then it is wet wading time and that leaky pair of waders fades from thought. Well it is about to start getting cool once again. Some leaks can be fixed simply with some Aquaseal or UV Wader Repair. Others are more serious. At some point in the life of a wader time will be the enemy. After years, even an unused pair of waders will begin to fail simply due to the waterproof/breathable membrane getting old. If your legs are saturated there is a good chance that it is a bigger issue than just some pin holes.
Fishing in the Smokies should be good today. Water levels are still up but if you take that into consideration you will have a fun time. I would still go to a mid to high elevation stream. On the Little River start somewhere upstream of Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area. If you prefer a hike then go to Elkmont and head up the Little River Trail.
For brook trout, my destination would be Lynn Camp Prong. Walking in until you reach the Panther Creek Trail junction will give you the best chance around to catch a native Southern Appalachian Brook Trout. With this cool weather they should really start to take on their fall colors soon.
Dries and Nymphs have been working well. I prefer dries so I would start with either a Smoky Mountain Candy or a Rob's Hellbender dry. #14 would be my choice. Terrestrials continue to work well. It is hard to beat an ant. They are nearly impossible to see so fish it as a dropper behind something visible.
Fly Tyer's Weekend is only about a month away. I'm updating all of the tyer's profiles on the website. We have some great fly tyers again this year. They are going to be tying everything from tiny midges to large saltwater streamers. The event is FREE so just come by. The ladies from Casting For Recovery will be selling food again as a fundraiser.
If you have any questions about Fly Tyer's Weekend give us a call here at the Shop 865-448-9459.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
