Little River is flowing at 127 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.71 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 85 cfs. The water temperature is 67.6 degrees this morning. Most streams in the Smokies are flowing above normal for this date.
Fishing conditions are good in the mountains. Higher than normal stream flows are helping. The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher. Look for water temperatures of 65 degrees or cooler. I would fish around Elkmont or Lynn Camp Prong. Later this week, water temperatures will fall.
Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. Trout are active and seeking food, thanks to the warmer than normal water temperatures, even in the high elevations.
I would still use Summer fly patterns, like Yellow Stimulator, Yellow Neversink Caddis, Parachute Adams, Smoky Mountain Candy, Green Weenie, Pheasant Tail, Prince or Tellico Nymphs. A foam beetle should still be working.
It will be partly cloudy today and tomorrow, and mostly cloudy Wednesday. Overcast skies are helpful for anglers like us, who fish shallow water.
The lakes have been fishing fairly well on cloudy days. When the sun is shining on the water, I’ve found the fish to be deep, and hard to reach with fly fishing gear. Last week Paula and I fished on a sunny day. We didn’t see any fish in shallow water. Those we talked to that were dong well, were trolling deep with spoons and plugs. On cloudy days, we are finding bass in shallow water.
I planned to work today but changed my mind. I’m going to take off and work around the house with an emphasis on washing and waxing our boat. I hope to fish one day later this week.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
