Little River is flowing at 151 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.81 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 73 cfs. The water temperature is 51.3 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smoky Mountains are flowing above normal.
The water is cooler in the high elevations. For instance, the water temperature at Cataloochee Creek is in the mid-40’s right now compared to 51 degrees in Little River near Townsend. Fishing will be best in the low to mid elevations today. We should see the water temperatures rise some through the balance of the week. Temperatures at night will be warmer than they have been lately.
Stream flows are excellent for October. Weather forecasters do not think we will see extremely heavy rain tomorrow night and Friday, but there will likely be enough to raise the stream levels some, by the weekend. That is all subject to change and we never know for sure until it comes.
Nymphs should work best. If the trout are looking up, dry flies may work too. I would start with nymphs, basic old patterns like, Tellico, Prince, Pheasant Tail or Hare’s Ear. I would add extra weight but vary the depth based on the water depth I am fishing. That is easier to do if you are not using strike indicators. If you like strike indicators, use them. They can really be helpful.
The huge tent has been erected behind the shop for Fly Tyers Weekend (FTW) which will be held Saturday and Sunday, 9 am until 5 pm, both days. Dave Carson told me yesterday, the number of fly tying demonstrators is 49, more than we have ever had at the event.
You should attend. FTW is FREE! All you have to do is show up.
The Casting For Recovery Team will be selling food and beverages, as usual. They do that to raise money for their Breast Cancer Survivor fly fishing retreats. Casting For Recovery holds retreats for women all over the country. You can read more about this great organization by CLICKING HERE.
Big Frank’s Outdoors will display some of the small fishing skiffs Frank sells. I hope he will be there. He is a fun guy to talk to.
We will have overflow parking across the street in the field near the shop.
I will be there both days. I’m really looking forward to FTW.
A very friendly and beautiful cat showed up at our house three days ago. He was a family pet. He has even been declawed, which makes him a potential victim for a predator, specifically a coyote. Also, without claws, he was not able to catch food. The poor cat was crying at our front door. Paula gave the cat a can of tuna that morning, and some salmon for the evening meal.
I bought canned cat food and Paula bought more. Yesterday, he ate 5 cans. He has a bed made on the front porch, with a heating pad underneath to keep him warm.
We are trying to not get attached to this kitty. We don’t want a pet, again. When they die, it is too painful. Yesterday, he followed me down to the boat house. He rolled over on his back. I rubbed his stomach. He started purring.
Paula has been posting online on Facebook pages related to lost pets and Townsend residents. Today, she is taking him to the vet to be scanned, hoping the owners placed a chip under the skin, identifying them. Next week, a space will be available for him at the Blount County Animal Center. They find new homes for lost pets. Visit the website by CLICKING HERE.
On one hand this has been very sad. On the other, he found people who care enough to keep him alive and find him a loving home.
He just woke up. I can hear him crying. He is hungry again. That cat can put away some food.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
