Little River is flowing at 187 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.94 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 111 cfs. The water temperature is 50.4 degrees this morning.
Flows are great. We could not ask for better water levels in early November.
Water temperatures are fine in the low elevations, but cool higher in the mountains. The temperatures are falling. At Cataloochee Creek, the water temperature is in the mid-40’s this morning.
I would fish the low elevations early today, then move up to higher streams as the water warms later today. I would start on the East Prong of Little River around Metcalf Bottoms to Elkmont. Or, fish the Middle Prong and West Prong. Later today, you might want to wander above Elkmont or to Lynn Camp Prong.
Nymphs will probably work best early. Try a Tellico, Prince, Pheasant Tail or Hare’s Ear. You may find sluggish trout early. Later, they will become more active. Dry flies may work, especially later today. Try a small Orange Stimulator or Orange Elk Hair Caddis.
Stealth is very important. Don’t let the trout see you. Dress to blend in and stay low.
The scenery is spectacular in the Smokies right now, especially in the low to mid elevations. The Fall colors are late, due to the warm October, but the wait was worth it. Todayy will be a perfect one to spend in the mountains.
The Missing Link of the Foothills Parkway will open to traffic next Saturday. Now this has been worth the long wait. The views from this 16-mile stretch of road are unbelievable. Most people have never seen this valley before, not like what you will see from there. What you will view is Tuckaleechee Cove, with Townsend in the center. I’ve been up there, riding with Park Service personnel.
Thursday, you will be able to walk part of the Parkway, without traffic. You will be shuttled from River Rat’s parking lot. You should be capable of walking two miles, with a 10% grade or wait and drive Saturday. I’m going to wait a week or so and go on a clear weekday, where there will be less traffic.
