Streams in the Smoky Mountains rose much of the day yesterday then eventually peaked. Some high water records for the date were broken. Some are still flowing high this morning.
Little River is flowing at 490 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.66 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 127 cfs. The water temperature is 54.3 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,020 cfs or 2.84 feet at the Sevierville gauge. That compares to 175 cfs median flow, for today’s date.
Ononaluftee is flowing at 851 cfs in Birdtown, compared to median flow of 225 cfs for this date.
We have high water today in some streams. Be careful wading if you go. I would fish close to the bank and “high stick” nymphs with plenty of extra weight to get them down. Streamers may work. Pick a pattern that resembles a sculpin. There is also a chance for a blue wing olive hatch. So, be ready for that with different sizes of dry flies and emergers.
You may find some streams are more angler friendly than others. Anthony Creek may be fine. The stream runs right through the picnic area at Cades Cove.
One or more prongs of Little River may be fine too. We consider a gauge reading of 2.5 feet to be on the high side of good. The river is almost at that level right now. Some anglers consider 2.5 feet high, while others think it is a very good level.
The problem is, more rain is coming tomorrow and especially on Friday. It may rain today too. We’ll have to see how that plays out.
The water temperature is within the trout’s preferred range in the low to mid elevations. You will probably do best fishing streams where the water temperature is 50 degrees or warmer. The USGS gauge at Cataloochee Creek, for instance, is indicating a water temperature around 47 degrees, and it is still falling right now.
This is interesting news. I voted yesterday, but could not vote in the Townsend City election because we live outside the city limits. There was a city referendum, I did not know about. To my surprise this morning, voters approved the sale of wine in grocery stores in Townsend.
I have been hearing complaints from visitors, for years, that they could not buy wine in Townsend. Cades Cove Cellars opened a winery in town, and they sell their own wine. Now, brands from other wineries will be available at grocery stores. I don’t know exactly what qualifies a store as a grocery, except that they sell food. We sell candy bars, snacks and soft drinks. No, we won’t be getting into the wine selling business.

Right after finishing yesterday’s fishing report, I heard a knock on our door. It was one of our neighbors, John. During the strong storm night before last, a huge dead pine tree on our property blew over and into the road. All three families who live on the private road were trapped.
I put three chain saws and a peavey in the Gator and drove to the site. John was already there. We went to work.
I only needed one of the chain saws I took because the first one I picked, started. I have not used my saws for a few months so I was pleased with that result. Small engines and I do not get along well.
We cut all the limbs off and sawed the trunk into 10 foot lengths. John dragged the big logs to his barn behind one of his tractors. I hooked our wagon to the Gator and filled it three times with limbs, and took them to John’s burn pile. The whole process took about 2 hours. What a way to start the day. John and I had a good time working together. We do that fairly often. We laugh a lot.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
