Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 9:56 am, the temperature outside is 52 degrees and it is raining. It looks like 52 is going to be the high for the day.
Rain should slack off later in the day but temperatures are going to be dropping. Falling water temperatures is seldom good for fishing. Skies are supposed to be clearing tomorrow and the sun is going to shine Sunday. As cold as it will get overnight don't plan on being on the water at sunrise. Get up, have some coffee, some breakfast, stop by the Shop and check on the growth of our Trout in the Classroom trout.....THEN head towards the mountains. You will want to give the streams a chance to start warming up.

The Little River is currently flowing at 2.34 feet or 332 c.f.s. This is quite a bit higher than the daily normal of 146 c.f.s. Water temperatures stayed steady overnight and are at 55F. We expect water levels to rise and temperatures to drop as the day progresses.
Nymphs are going to be your best bet over the next several days. Pat's Rubberlegs, Tellico Nymphs, Prince Nymphs, Double Tungsten Stoneflies with extra split shot will be good choices. When water temperatures drop you will need to get the flies down to the bottom.
The brown trout are moving into their spawning areas. Some anglers will search them out and fish for them. Others will say that fishing for spawning fish is wrong. That is a choice for each angler to make. No matter what you think it is important to be aware of redds. "Redd n. A spawning nest made by a fish, especially a salmon or trout." Wading through a redd can damage the eggs layed there. This article is from Washington State but still applies. You can read it HERE.
Redds will be lighter areas in the shallower gravel. They appear lighter because as the trout fan and clear out a depression to lay the eggs it disturbs the sediment and lets it wash away. Watching browns defending their redds and competing for females is a fascinating Fall event.
Our first shipment of 2019 Fishpond items arrived yesterday. As always the new products look great. Our favorite has got to be the new Lost Trail Wading Staff. It folds down small, deploys easily and has a solid cable core. The price is also only $89.95. This is going to become our best selling wading staff. Byron put all of the new products in their own category making it really easy to know what you want to put on your Christmas list. New For 2019 Fishpond!
Oh, I remembered what I wanted to put in here. I have an idea for t-shirts but I need to know what you think are the iconic scenes from around the Smokies or the area in general. For example...what do you picture in your mind when you think about going to fish Elkmont? Email me at info@littleriveroutfitters.com and let me know.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
