Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. The sun is shining this morning, a welcome site after the gloomy wetness of yesterday. Despite the cold temperatures it is going to be a pretty weekend here in the Smokies.

The Little River is in much better shape than I was expecting it to be after the rain yesterday. The gauge is giving a reading of 2.48 feet or 396 c.f.s. This is quite a bit higher than the daily normal of 156 c.f.s. The stream should be flowing clear but you will find a lot of leaves and the water will be tinted dark with the tanin.
Water temperatures dropped overnight and this morning the lower stretch of Little River is 50.9 F. Afternoon will be a better time to fish once the sun gets on the water and there is a time for everything to begin warming up.
Nymphs are going to be your best bet. I always like Prince Nymphs. A bead head prince is just the first nymph I usually dig out of the box. Others prefer Tellicos or Pheasant Tails. Sometimes the large nymphs like the Pat's Rubberlegs can be very effective, especially this time of year. Cold water temps will have the trout hugging the bottom. Split shot will be important today. If you aren't getting hung up occasionally you don't have enough shot.
Be careful about leaves!! Especially if you are out early in the morning they can be coated in frost and can be treacherous along the river bank. When you are wading in the water, avoid areas of the bottom with a large amounts of leaves. Leaves setttle in depressions on the stream bottom. What looks like shallow, level ground could be hiding a deep pocket. Falling in and getting soaked when the air temperature is below 50 F is not a good.
I'm going to keep this brief so I can get it uploaded earlier. If you head to the river look for sunny spots and bundle up. It is cold out there and isn't supposed to warm up much.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
