Little River is flowing at 1,350 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.82 feet on the flow gauge. That is a record for this date, beating 974 cfs in 2010. Median flow for this date is 141 cfs. The water temperature is 52.2 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 4,060 cfs or 5.09 feet on the gauge in Sevierville. That sets another record for this date, beating 3,200 cfs in 1936. Median flow is 190 cfs.
Oconaluftee River has also set a record for this date at 1,730 cfs. The prior record of 1,260 cfs was set in 1976.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 348 cfs which is also a record for this date. The previous record was 344 cfs set in 2010.
All of the streams were flowing higher last night but have receded, though they are now rising again.
I think all streams in the Park are too high to wade safely. Some streams could be stained this morning. These are not good fishing conditions for those using fly rods. If the rain is light, as predicted, there will be some drop in the flows today.
Rainfall tomorrow is predicted to be somewhat heavier than today. Heavy rain will likely raise the stream levels Wednesday night and Thursday, again.
You could stand near the bank and “high stick” nymphs or streamers. Some anglers who normally fish with fly rods will use spinning outfits today. I believe most anglers will stay home. I plan to work today.
We may see snow or rain mixed with snow, Thursday night and early Friday.
Saturday and Sunday will be dry. Fishing next week may be good. The chance for rain will be lower next week. Air temps will be fairly warm.
Our sport is weather dependent. This has been a very wet year. Fishing has been good and sometimes excellent this year. High water events like have have now can spoil the fishing, temporarily.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
