The predicted temperatures above are above freezing for the most part. I slight difference, could make a huge difference, between rain and frozen precipitation.
US 441/Newfound Gap Road is closed due to ice and snow. Foothills Parkway West, from Walland to Wears Valley is closed due to the ice and snow forecast.
Little River is flowing at 279 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.21 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 188 cfs. The water temperature is 44.4 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams are flowing above median flow in the Park.
The water temperature at the Birdtown gauge on Oconaluftee River is 42.8 degrees. The gauge at Cataloochee Creek is reporting a water temperature of 39.9 degrees.
Water temperatures are not likely to rise today, and they could fall. Little River is fairly warm in the low elevations. If you go fishing this morning, I would fish the low elevations. The West and Middle Prongs of Little River would be my choices.
I would use heavily weighted nymphs or streamers. Watch for a blue wing olive hatch.
Fishing could be fair in the lower elevation streams. Or, fishing could be slow. The water is chilly, causing trout to be lethargic. However, the water temp at the Townsend Gauge on Little River is not that cold. Trout may be feeding. Post spawn brown trout may be feeding. Trout in other low elevation streams may be feeding.
I would not venture too far from a road. Keep a change of dry and warm clothing in your vehicle in case you get wet.
Later today, if the temps are actually colder than predicted, more roads may close.
I’m going to work today and tomorrow in our warm store.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
