Little River is flowing at 421 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.53 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 253 cfs. The water temperature is 51.1 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 856 cfs, 2.66 feet on the gauge, and that compares to median flow of 330 cfs.
Oconaluftee River, at the Birdtown gauge is flowing at 1,040 cfs, 2.58 feet, and that compares to median flow of 409 cfs. The water temperature is 46.8 degrees. The river is rising and is slightly off color this morning.
Cataloochee Creek is rising. Flow is currently 240 cfs compared to median flow of 83 cfs. The water temperature is 41.7 degrees.
Depending on where you go, water levels are varying. Little River is flowing on the high side of good right now.
Little River’s water temperature is excellent. Trout will be active. Fishing will be good if more rain does not spoil the day. Water temperatures in most low elevation streams are fair to good for trout fishing success.
Nymphs and streamers are good choices. There is also a chance for aquatic insect activity. Watch for a blue wing olive hatch. With the water temperature at or near 50 degrees, trout may be feeding on the surface, so be prepared for dry fly fishing.
I’m going to call fishing “Good” today, based on the low elevation water temperatures and hoping for little to no rain. Fishing may be fair to good tomorrow. Tonight will be colder than last night, so water temperatures may fall by tomorrow morning.
Visit the shop today for our Free event, featuring Walter Babb and Jack Gregory. They will be conducting fly tying demonstrations and talking about fly fishing. These guys are experts.
All you have to do is show up. They will be demonstrating between 10 am and 2 pm. This is going to be a fun and informative day at the shop. Mike McConkey will be cooking and serving free pancakes.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
