Little River is flowing at 431 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.55 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 263 cfs. The water temperature is 49.6 degrees and falling this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 998 cfs, 2.82 feet on the gauge, compared to median flow of 314 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,100 cfs, 2.65 feet, and that compares to median flow of 446 cfs. The water temperature is 45.7 degrees and falling.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 292 cfs, 3.22 feet, which compares to the median flow for this date of 84 cfs.
Fishing was very good yesterday. Water temperatures were fairly warm early in the morning, and rising. It will be cooler today. Water temperatures are falling. Fishing may be good, but probably not like yesterday, due to the chilling water. The water may begin to warm later this morning, which would improve the fishing. I really don’t think that will happen.
Some streams are flowing higher than they were yesterday, especially on the North Carolina side of the Park. Little River is flowing at about the same level as it was yesterday morning.
So, I think fishing will be fair and possibly good today. I don’t think fishing will be as good as it was yesterday.
Nymphs or streamers will be good choices at first. Try Tellico, Prince, Hare’s Ear or Pheasant Tail nymphs. A good streamer choice is a Muddler Minnow or any streamer that mimics a sculpin. Flows are strong so you will probably do best by adding plenty of weight to your nymphs or streamers.
You may see blue wing olives or other aquatic insects on the water, and maybe, see trout feeding on them. Switch to a dry fly or emerger, or both, if you see this kind of activity.
I would fish a low elevation stream where the water is warmer.
We held a great event at the shop yesterday. Walter Babb and Jack Gregory were tying flies and talking about tying and fishing.
I pulled into the parking lot after going to Maryville early yesterday. The lot was almost full. Our lot holds 50 vehicles. I parked behind the dumpster.
Inside, the store was teeming with friends, customers and avid anglers. I talked to everyone I could during the day. I saw people I have not seen in a long time. Everyone, including me, had a great time. Jack came over to our house afterwards, and we laughed and talked for a couple of hours.
Jack and I talk about many things, but mostly, fishing and college football. Walter had to head back to Sweetwater, or he would have been here with us.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
