Little River is flowing at 777 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.09 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 278 cfs. The water temperature is 46.8 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing strong at 1,620 cfs, 3.39 feet at the Sevierville gauge, and that compares to median flow of 424 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,090 cfs, 2.64 feet at Birdtown, compared to median flow of 497 cfs. The water temperature is 42.3 degrees.
Tellico River at Tellico Plains is flowing at 766 cfs or 2.69 feet on the gauge. Median flow is 229 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 270 cfs which compares to median flow of 99 cfs.
Most streams are still flowing too high to wade safely in many areas. Be careful.
If you decide to go today, you could stand near the banks of swollen rivers and use heavily weighted nymphs or streamers. And, you may find some streams that are more angler friendly. Anthony Creek at the Cades Cove Picnic Area is usually a good choice when the streams are flowing high, like they are now.
Don’t expect great fishing. The conditions are not favorable. You might entice a post spawn brown trout. They may be actively feeding today. Use heavy tippet when fishing for them right now. You probably won’t be able to chase one downstream or upstream due to high water. Stand your ground and hope for the best.
I don’t know if roads are closed in the Park due to ice and snow. The last report I read indicated Highway 441 was closed. It may be open now. The Park Service is not updating their Roads Twitter Page, due to the partial US Government shutdown. The Park is open to visitors, with limited services. Many people working there have been furloughed.
I am not furloughed and I will be working today ordering fly tying materials and tools. I placed a huge order with Wapsi yesterday, the largest so far this year. That department has been busy. We have a 96% increase in sales, for the first 3 weeks of December, compared to the same period last year.
The shop will be open from 9 am until noon today. We will be closed tomorrow, Christmas Day. Visitors to Townsend and local customers will be coming to the shop this morning, to make last minute purchases and check in. We were busy yesterday.
I hope you all have a great Christmas and thank you for supporting all of us at Little River Outfitters over the years and again this year.
