It was windy in Townsend yesterday, but nothing like the wind experienced in the Park. I was at the shop yesterday, and heard stories from customers who visited the Park. The wind in the mountains was awful.
Due to the partial government shutdown, the Park service said they would cease posting road closings on their Roads Twitter page. They changed their mind. Several roads did close due to the wind, and they were listed on the Twitter Page. Little River Road, Cades Cove Loop Road and US 441 (Newfound Gap Road) are closed. They may open later. I don’t know.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing very high. Little River is flowing at 4,520 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 6.62 feet on the gauge. A reading of 8 feet on the gauge is considered to be at flood stage. That is a record for this date, which was last set in 1975 at 2,300 cfs.
Little Pigeon River at Sevierville is flowing at 10,100 cfs, 8.08 feet on the gauge. The record for this date was 8,460 cfs, set in 1933.
Oconaluftee River at the Birdtown gauge is flowing at 8,480 cfs or 7.9 feet. This is yet another record for this date. The prior record was set in 1984 at 1,720 cfs.
Tellico River is flowing at 3,559 cfs, compared to median flow of 281 cfs. The gauge height is 7.64 feet.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 1,460 cfs, 5.17 feet and that compares to median flow for this date of 104 cfs. That is another record for this date, set in 1984 at 408 cfs.
Obviously, this is not a good day to be fishing or even visiting the Park. Some primary roads are closed. Streams may be flooded or could flood later. We may get more heavy rain. It is raining right now, though the rain is not heavy.
I won’t know until daybreak, if we can even get out of here. The most recent wind event like we had last night, trapped us for a few hours due to a large pine tree that fell over our road. Our neighbor and I cut it up and dragged the big pieces away with a tractor. I’m hoping not to face that this morning.
My plan is to work all weekend on our online store.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
