Little River is flowing at 387 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.46 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 284 cfs. The water temperature is 42.8 degrees this morning and the temp is falling.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 730 cfs, 2.5 feet, compared to median flow of 466 cfs.
Oconaluftee River at Birdtown is flowing at 883 cfs, 2.4 feet, compared to median flow of 535 cfs. The water temperature is 40.1 degrees and falling.
Tellico River is flowing at 473 cfs or 2.07 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 281 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 193 cfs, 2.92 feet, compared to median flow of 112 cfs. The water temperature there is 38.3 degrees and falling.
I believe fishing will be much slower today and tomorrow, due to the falling water temperatures. It will be cold today, and tonight. The water temps are in the low 40’s already this morning in the low elevations and colder than that higher in the mountains. Trout become sluggish when the water is in the low 40’s and they are very inactive when the temperature is below 40 degrees. The sun may stop the decline at some point today, but I think it will be too late.
Jack fished in the Park yesterday and caught three browns. That was a tough day for him. He blamed the bright sun. Today we will have the bright sun and cold water.
If you go, plan on using weighted nymphs or streamers. You might catch some trout but I would not count on too much action. If you go, dress warm and keep an extra change of dry clothes in your vehicle in case you get wet. The streams are still flowing strong. You don’t want to fall in when the air temperatures are near the freezing mark.
It is good to be home. Paula and I drove to Nashville Sunday, and returned yesterday. We attended a fishing and hunting show for retailers only at the convention center downtown. It was a great show, attended by about 1,800 dealers. We found tackle and gear I will be ordering for the shop to be delivered in early Spring.
Little River Road between Metcalf Bottoms and the Townsend “Y” is still closed due to a rock slide and trees on the road. The Park is running “short staffed” due to the government shutdown. They evidently do not have the crews working to clear the road. I will be glad when this is over.
Jack told me yesterday, there were almost no people in the Park. Maybe people are worried about the shutdown and staying away. It seems to me, there are less people traveling through town than I can remember yesterday, except during snow storms. It could be my perspective is skewed after spending three days in downtown Nashville. There was no shortage of traffic there.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
