Little River is flowing at 537 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.74 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 292 cfs. The water temperature is 44.4 degrees and rising this morning.
Flows are still strong in most streams, and the water temperatures are warm.
Due to the warming water temperatures, fishing could be fair to good. Until the winds stop blowing, I would stay out of the forest. It is daybreak right now and I can see the trees moving side to side. Branches have fallen all around our house.
I would not be surprised to see road closures in the Park, due to high winds and trees falling on roads.
I think is is going to be a good day to tie flies or work. I am going to work.
Paula and I had a great time last night, attending the Little River Chapter of Trout Unlimited meeting. I gave the program describing how the chapter was organized and the many things we did to assist the Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s Fisheries Department. Both the Little River Chapter and the Great Smoky Mountains Chapter partnered on projects, ongoing research, fundraising and providing volunteers. It is quite a story.
To prepare, I sat in my home office for several hours yesterday, trying to remember everything that happened in sequence. That was not an easy task. The Little River Chapter is 26 years old. I started working on it way before we chartered. There was a lot of interesting stuff I forgot about, until yesterday. I typed six pages to prepare. And somehow, I skipped one page during the presentation last night.
Three of the original board members and officer were there last night, me, Pete Yeomans and Wayne Everbach. A lot of people showed up and we all had a good time.
The Chapter is running smooth and well. The officers and board members are top notch. That is what it takes. When you have good leadership and a defined mission, everything else falls into place.
Don’t forget, Will Davis and Tradd Little will be tying at the shop Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. These young men are exceptional fly tyers. Will lives in Knoxville. Tradd lives in Greenville, South Carolina.
This event is free. All you have to do is show up.
I talked to Will and his dad at the meeting last night. They are both very involved with TU. That is always great to see.
The wind is howling. I can see birds clinging to the feeders barely able to hold on. I don’t usually see anything outside when I’m writing this report. It is usually dark outside. I slept late today because the wind kept me up most of the night.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
