Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:50 am, the temperature outside is 27.1 degrees.
Today will be cloudy with high temperatures in the upper 40’s. Tonight’s low will drop to the lower 30’s. It will be much warmer this weekend, with high temperatures in the low 60’s, Saturday and Sunday. Lows will be in the upper 30’s.
Monday through Wednesday will be very warm, with highs reaching the mid to upper 60’s and lows falling only to the 40’s and 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 291 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.24 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 305 cfs. The water temperature is 38.1 degrees this morning.
Most streams are flowing at or near median flow today.
Stream temperatures will warm over the next few days. Fishing will improve each day. I think fishing will be good, especially next week. It will rain next week. We will have to wait and see how much rain we get and what affect that will have on fishing.
What we are waiting for are water temperatures in the mid to upper 40’s. That should occur sometime over the next few days. I’m not sure when. When it does, fishing will be much better. When the water temperature climbs near 50 degrees, fishing will be very good.
I would fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. You may want to wait until later in the mornings. The temps will fall at night and creep up later.
Next week may be different. Water temps may be warm early. That is hard to predict right now.
I think weighted nymphs will work best, unless you see a hatch of aquatic insects. They will likely be blue wing olives. When the water is warmer, trout may be feeding on the surface. Other insects may be on the water too, especially next week.
The next few days are going to be interesting and possibly very exciting. I’m getting excited just writing about it.
Come by the shop tomorrow morning and spend some time with us. Gary Troutman and Jim Parks will be conducting fly tying demonstrations and fly fishing discussion. This event is free. They will be positioned at different locations n the shop. You can spend time with one, then switch to the other later.
Gary is a professional guide and US Coast Guard Captain. He partners with Josh Pfeiffer at Frontier Anglers. CLICK HERE to vist their new website. Gary loves fly fishing for smallmouth bass and warmwater species, though he also fishes and guides trout fishing clients in the Smokies and on the tailwaters.
I have known Jim Parks for many years. He lives in Newport Tennessee. He has been fly fishing in the Smoky Mountains for 41 years. Jim will be tying his four, easy to tie and very effective patterns, while describing how he uses them.
Like I said, the event is free. All you have to do is show up. Gary and Jim will be demonstrating between 10 am and 2 pm. CLICK HERE to see our Free Saturday and Sunday Fly Tying Demo schedule and learn more about each fly fisherman.
Paula and I will be at the shop today learning to use all of our latest software, including our new point of sale system we fired up January 2nd. We are doing this in case we get some snow and our staff can’t work. She and I will keep the store open if that happens. Sometimes snow lingers for days. We want the shop to be open every day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
