Townsend, Tennessee - Fly Fishing in the Great Smoky Mountains, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

If you do not see today’s Fishing Report, please refresh your browser to empty your cache.

Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:31 am, the temperature outside is 50.2 degrees.

It rained for a while early this morning and .14” was reported from a Townsend personal weather station. There is still a chance for showers this morning and isolated thunderstorms this afternoon.

It will be warm today, in the low 70’s, with tonight’s low dipping only to the low 60’s. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy and warmer, with highs reaching or passing the 75 degree mark. Tomorrow night and Friday will be cooler. The low temperature Friday night is predicted to be in the mid 20’s.

Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.06 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 360 cfs.

The water temperature is 50.2 degrees this morning and steady. That number peaked at over 51 degrees last night.

Fishing conditions right now are very good. The only spoiler is the possibility of a thunderstorm dropping heavy rain in one or more of the watersheds in the Park. Water temperatures are very good, and they should rise further today and tomorrow. The warmer the water becomes today and tomorrow, the better the fishing will be.

I worked at the shop yesterday, and we were busy for a Tuesday in early February. I did not talk to any returning anglers.

Fishing was probably good yesterday. Barring heavy rain, fishing will be better today and tomorrow.

Fifty degrees is a magic number in the Spring. We always see more trout and aquatic insect activity when the water reaches that temperature.

Most Smokies anglers agree, when the water reaches 50 degrees, and the temperature is sustained for two or three days, Quill Gordons and Blue Quills start hatching. You may see that happen. I think it was last year, when the bugs started popping off, and the water temperature was only 47 degrees. That could have been the year before.

If you go today, nymphs will work. Dry flies may work too but that is not certain. Even if you see insects on the surface, it is not a “given” the trout will be feeding on them. Sometimes it takes a few days, for the trout to figure out the insects are on the surface. We have always referred to that as, “They are not looking up yet”. The trout may also be feeding on the nymphs and emergers, and not focused on the adult insects.

If you go, be prepared with at least a few sizes of Parachute Adams dry flies, #12, #14 and #16. A Parachute Adams dry fly works pretty well when the early Spring hatches occur. You should also have some Blue Wing Olive Patterns, #16 or smaller.

To be really prepared, have a few Quill Gordon and Blue Quill flies in your box.

You may not need any of these. On the other hand, they could prove to be essential.

It will be colder this weekend. Water temperatures will dip. Fishing may slow. How slow the fishing gets will depend on the water temperature, as usual. We will have some warm days again next week. The long term forecast calls for much warmer than normal temperatures through February 20th. That seems to occur more often that it did years ago.

When the Spring hatches begin, and it turns cold, dropping the water temperatures, the insect activity continues. In other words, when they start, they keep going. And, if the water does not get too cold, the trout continue to feed on the insects. That often happens during the early Spring.

I don’t know what insects you will see on the water today or tomorrow. You may not see anything. If you don’t see anything, fish with nymphs. You should do well.

I am hoping for at least “fair” fishing this weekend.

Our 2019 Fly Fishing School schedule has been updated on othe website. This schedule also includes our remaining fly tying classes. You can see the schedule by CLICKING HERE. There you can also learn more about all of our 2019 classes. If you or someone you know is interested in learning to fly fish or tie flies, our school is an excellent place to start. Our school has been in operation for over 20 years.

We have two great FREE fly tying demonstrations for you to enjoy this weekend, one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. These free demos begin at 10 am and end at 2 pm each day. All you have to do is show up. You can read our Winter Free Saturday Tying Demonstration page by CLICKING HERE.

Saturday: Steve Brown and Mike Wallace. Steve has been tying for 20 years. His home water is the Clinch River. Mike has been tying for 30 years. He fishes the mountain streams and the Holston and Watauga rivers.

Sunday: Guides David Knapp and Travis Williams. David guides in the Smoky Mountains, on the Cumberland Plateau and on the Caney Fork River. Travis guides in the Smokies.

Our free fly tying demos will run through March 2nd, ending with Jack Gregory and Walter Babb.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
