Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. Clouds are hanging low over the mountains this morning on the drive in. There is a chance of rain today but mostly later in the afternoon.
Water levels on the Little River are up some but at a fishable level. This morning the gauge is reading 2.62 feet or 468 c.f.s. This is higher than the daily normal of 374 c.f.s. The streams had been flowing mostly clear.
Water temperatures are on the rise. This morning the temperature is up to 47F. Warming is a good thing.
Spring hatches are starting. Blue Quills are small, size #18 and #20. Blue Duns will be larger, around #14. Quill Gordons are the big mayflies you'll see. They will be from #10 - #14. Blue Winged Olives also hatch this time of year.
A good place to look for Quill Gordon hatches are the large pools downstream from a riffle. The nymphs will live in the rougher water but wash down into the pool where it is easier to emerge. Quill Gordon nymphs hatch into adults below the water then swim to the surface. At this stage they are more vulnerable to being eaten. Wet flies immitate the adults as they swim to the top.
When you head to the river today stay out of the water as much as possible. Water levels are still up so you need to be careful. Conditions are improving, especially water temperature. The large pools on Little River along the road can be excellent places this time of year. The water settles out and they can be the location of good hatches.
Spring is almost here. New products are showing up every day. Some gorgeous Abel reels came in. There is a big Platinum colored 8wt perfect for some saltwater fishing. The one that steals the show is the 5/6 weight Super Series in the Native Brown Trout color scheme. There is even one in a dark green finish that matches perfect to the blank of a Winston rod. We've got those too. If you have never cast a Winston you should. They are arguably some of the nicest trout rods on the market.
Next time you are headed to the mountains stop in and check out all the new gear!!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
