Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:47 am, the temperature outside is 71 degrees.
It is going to be hot today, probably 90 degrees. We have a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms early this afternoon. Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy. It is 100% cloudy at this time, in Townsend. This looks like the beginning of a great fishing day. My office view is toward the Smokies. It could look different to the west.
Little River is flowing at 232 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.05 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 153 cfs. The water temperature is 69.3 degrees this morning.
Dense fog is following the path of Little River from the Park, into Townsend this morning.
All streams in the Smoky Mountains, that have USGS gauges, are flowing at or above normal for this date.
Fly fishermen are loving our good water levels in the mountains. Fishing conditions are good. The water is warm in the lowest elevations, but a short drive upstream will change that. Fish a mid to high elevation stream where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the 60’s.
I pulled into the parking lot at the shop at 6:35 am. Another truck followed me and parked. That usually means someone is meeting a guide, early. Or, they may be meeting a friend.
Dry flies and nymphs will both work. What we have now are good dry fly flows. I would use a terrestrial floating fly of some sort, probably a beetle. Drop a Green Weenie off your dry fly. Many other dry flies will produce, including Yellow Sally Stonefly patterns. A good one is the Yellow Neversink Caddis. The trout think it is a stonefly.
Lowland river fishing for smallmouth bass will probably be good today. If this cloud cover continues, through the day, you will do best. I would use poppers. Streamers may be a good choice too.
Lake fishing is another option, with enhanced conditions due to the cloud cover. Poppers and streamers are what I would use.
TVA is cranking the turbines at many dams where our tailwaters originate today. Check the TVA website for flow schedules from the links below. You may find an opportunity I missed. If you are floating, you will have more options.
A good chance for showers and thunderstorms returns tomorrow and lasts through the weekend. More rain will sustain the good stream flows we are enjoying. Bring it on!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
