Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:53 am, the temperature outside is 67.3 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low 80’s. We have a 50% chance for scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. The chance for rain is greater tomorrow and Sunday, with less of a chance on Saturday.
Little River was affected by scattered showers late yesterday and early this morning, but no significant rise in water levels occurred. Currently, flow is 260 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.13 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 125 cfs. The water temperature is 67.3 degrees this morning. The water level peaked and it is receding.
Little Pigeon River is rising, due to rain that began at midnight. Flow is 561 cfs, 2.22 feet, compared to median flow of 245 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 425 cfs, 1.72 feet, compared to median flow of 300 cfs.
Tellico River got a small shot of rain late last night and this morning. Flow at the Tellico Plains gauge is 184 cfs, 1.28 feet, compared to median flow of 118 cfs.
It rained in the Cataloochee watershed late yesterday. Flow is currently 97.6 cfs, 2.55 feet, compared to median flow of 58 cfs.
Water levels are very good. Water temperatures are good, especially in the mid to high elevations. And, fishing is good in the Smokies.
Dry flies or nymphs will work. More important than fly selection is, stealth and presentation. Try not to let the trout see you. Dress to blend with the forest. Get a good drift. Personally, I would choose terrestrial imitations, black foam beetles and Green Weenies, but most reasonable fly patterns will work.
Lowland River conditions are very good, though it is possible you may find stained water. Most rivers should be clear running out of the Smokies. A thunderstorm downstream could cause some turbidity. I would use poppers or foam floating flies, for smallmouth bass and other warm water species. Find shaded areas in the rivers if that is possible where you are fishing.
Lake fishing is fine early or late when the sun is off the water. Poppers and foam floating flies will probably work. If not, go to streamers or Rubber Legged Dragons. If nothing works for you, move to another spot with a different substrate or cover. I love fly fishing for smallmouth bass on lakes. Sometimes the bass prefer rocky shoreline, while at other times they like wooded cover.
Some tailwaters in the region are offering you fishing opportunities, especially if you plan to float. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
