Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 9 this morning we are still at a cool 72F. Today won't be as hot as we have seen recently with highs only in the upper 80's.
Today's weather forecast is clear skies. There is always a possibility of storms popping up in the afternoon.
Water levels across the Smokies are good. This morning the gauge on Little River is giving a reading of 1.55 feet or 72.7 c.f.s. The daily normal is 109 c.f.s. Water clarity is clear.
Water temperatures are good for this time of year. At 9 am the water temperature on the gauge was 71.6F. Higher elevations will be cooler. Fishing will be best early in the day or later in the afternoon. Mid-day when it is hottest will be slow.
The moon is full. If fishing is slower today I will blame it on that. I think that on a full moon if the sky is clear the trout will feed overnight and not so much during the day. I don't have any actual evidence of that but we do hear more slow fishing reports around the full moon.
Tremont has been fishing good. Fishing along the gravel will be better than the lower end. Lynn Camp Prong is also good this time of year. If you head to Little River, I would go above Metcalf Bottoms or even hike in above Elkmont Campground.
Yellow Sally dry flies contnue to work well. Beetles and ants are also very effective in the summer. A green weenie or a small pheasant tail will make a good dropper.
School has started back in many areas. Crowds through the week have thinned drastically. We have noticed it in the Shop. It is like someone flipped a switch. All summer has been very busy then click. This happens every year and it is a good break after a busy time.
The sales reps are coming around and starting to show us the new products for 2020. Fishpond has three new vests and a new sling that looks great. They are also going to change the color on their waxed cotton field collection. It is going to be a dark mossy green. Sage has some new rods out. They have redone the Trout LL. It is a moderate action trout rod perfect for the mountains. There is also a new streamer rod call the Payload.
Scott rods is re-doing the Meridian rod. Their new rod is called the Sector. I haven't been able to cast it yet but the rep says it is an improvement over the older rod. I have an 8wt and 9wt on order right now and we are expecting them at the end of this month or early September.
Rio has a new short version of their Euro nymphing line. This one is designed to loop onto your regular fly line so you can swith over to Euro without having to have multiple spools. They also have a black and white Two Tone sighter line. Speaking of Euro line, we now have some pre-made lines from John Chambers. He tied up some while he was out in Montana.
All these new items haven't made it onto the online catalog yet so stop by the Shop or give us a call if you want to learn more.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
