Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:12 am, the temperature outside is 72.0 degrees.
It is raining, and has been overnight. Rainfall totals for the past 24 hours include .53 inches in Townsend and .31 inches at the Knoxville Airport.
The rain will end later this morning and the sky will become sunny by this afternoon. Expect a high temperature in the low 80’s today, falling to the 50’s tonight.
Little River is flowing at 107 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.72 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 102 cfs. The water temperature is 71.1 degrees.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 422 cfs, 1.96 feet, compared to median flow of 175 cfs for this date.
Oconaluftee River is flowing higher than normal at 337 cfs, 1.65 feet, and that compares to median flow of 224 cfs. The water temperature is 65.1 degrees.
Tellico River has been rising overnight, but the river has peaked at 144 cfs or 1.12 feet. Median flow for this date is 90 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek has not been affected much by rain. Flow there is 53.1 cfs, 2.33 feet, compared to median flow of 46 cfs.
This will be a good fishing day in the Smokies, except for the chance you may find temporarily stained water in some streams this morning. They will clear quickly if they are. And, there is a chance some streams will rise further.
Fish the mid to high elevations where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. I would use a terrestrial dry, probably a foam beetle, or other attractor flies, including a Yellow Neversink Caddis or a Yellow Stimulator. A Green Weenie would still be my choice for a sub-surface fly. Drop the Weenie off your dry fly or fish it alone and weighted. Try Pink Weenies too, especially in the brook trout streams.
Some lowland rivers may be stained, or maybe they are not. If not, fish poppers or foam floating flies for smallmouth bass, rock bass or sunfishes.
The same is true on the lakes. Use poppers or foam floating flies. Go early, before the sky clears and there is sun on the water. Later, you may need to switch to streamers or Rubber Legged Dragons and fish the shaded banks.
I don’t see many wade fishing opportunities on the tailwaters. There are more choices if you are boating. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with their generation schedules and sluicing.
Business has been slow at the shop, so far this week. That is usual before a holiday weekend. August business is better than last year and 2017, month to date.
I will continue to be busy receiving orders from our manufacturers for the fly tying and optic departments. We will see a lot of customers this weekend. The weather looks good so there will be a lot of visitors in the Park and gateway towns, for the holiday.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
