Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:06 am, the temperature outside is 67.3 degrees.
Today will be warm and dry. Tomorrow will be hot, maybe reaching 90 degrees.
Little River is flowing low at 50.1 cubic feet per second (cfs), or 1.42 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 86 cfs. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is still flowing above normal for this date at 183 cfs, 1.47 feet, compared to median flow of 166 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing slightly above normal at 204 cfs, 1.33 feet, compared to median flow of 198 cfs. The water temperature is 66.5 degrees.
Tellico River is still flowing above normal at 93.1 cfs, .88 feet, which compares to median flow of 81 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing just below normal at 41.4 cfs, 2.25 feet on the gauge, which compares to median flow of 45 cfs for this date. The water temperature is 61.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams that have USGS gauge sites are flowing at normal except Little River. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the mid to high elevation streams where the water is cooler. Look for temperatures in the 60’s.
You will probably find most lowland rivers flowing near normal with Little River being the exception. Go early or late. Poppers and foam floating flies will work for smallmouth bass and other warmwater species. Fish the shaded areas of the rivers.
The same advice holds true for the lakes. Go early or late to avoid the sun. Smallmouth, bass, largemouth bass and other species will be deep when the sun is on the water. You can catch them on poppers or foam floating flies on the shaded banks. Switch to streamers or Dragons later in the morning.
The Clinch River below Norris Dam may be fishable today at times. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to determine if you can work with their generation schedules and sluicing, on your favorite tailwater today.
What we need is rain and cooler temperatures.
The Bahamas are damaged beyond belief. People have died. Hurricane Dorian has forced evacuations at much of the Southeast coast. What we need is for that storm to head out to sea. To our friends in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, please prepare and be safe.
I hope you can have a safe day and thank you for being here with us.
