Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:09 am, the temperature outside is 68.5 degrees.
It will be cooler today, with a high temperature in the mid-80’s. Lows tonight will be in the low 60’s. It will be warm through the weekend, with sunny days with a very low chance for rain.
Little River is flowing at 43.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.38 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 92 cfs. The water temperature is 72 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing below normal this morning at 149 cfs, 1.37 feet, compared to median flow of 168 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is also flowing below median flow, at 191 cfs or 1.29 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 232 cfs. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing near normal at 84.7 cfs, .83 feet, compared to median flow of 87 cfs.
Cataloochee Creeks is flowing at 40.1 cfs, 2.24 feet, compared to median flow of 45 cfs. The water temperature is 63.1 degrees.
With no rain predicted in the immediate future, stream flows will slowly recede over the next few days.
Low elevation streams are warm. Fish the mid to high elevation streams where the water is cooler. Look for temperatures in the 60’s.
It will be sunny all week. If you go fishing early, you will do best.
Dress to blend with the forest so the trout do not see you. Do that, and don’t spook them with your fly line or by wading nearby, and you will catch trout. Fish the broken water in riffles, plunge pools and runs. Or, fish the shaded banks that have cover, using terrestrial dry flies.
Anglers are catching trout under these conditions. Hiking into the backcountry is a good option.
Lowland Rivers are flowing low. Go early or late. Fish the shaded areas in deeper pools. Cast poppers or foam floating flies fto catch smallmouth bass and other warmwater species.
If you are planning to fish a lake, go early. I would be there at daybreak. As the sun rises, fish the shaded banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or Rubber Legged Dragons.
Check the TVA website from the links below to determine your best options today at the area tailwaters.
Now that the holiday weekend is over, traffic is very light in Townsend. That is usual. There are visitors here who changed their coastal vacation plans due to the hurricane. But overall, not many people are visiting our town this week. We will see those numbers grow over the next few weeks.
Businesses are preparing for the increased Fall tourism visitation that occurs each year.
The long term weather forecast indicates a much higher chance for rain and thunderstorms beginning Tuesday and lasting through September 19th. I also noticed predicted cooler temperatures on that date. Until then, it will be warm and hopefully wet.
To our friends on the Carolina coast, please be prepared and stay safe.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
