Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:17 am, the temperature outside is 62.4 degrees.
It will be warm today and hot tomorrow, with a high today in the upper 80’s to 90 degrees. Tomorrow we’ll see temps in the low 90’s. No rain is predicted until possibly Tuesday.
Little River is flowing at 34.4 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.31 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 85 cfs. The water temperature is 70.2 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 128 cfs, 1.30 feet, compared to median flow of 139 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 172 cfs, 1.23 feet, and that compares to median flow of 196 cfs. The water temperature is 66 degrees.
Tellico River is flowing at 78.3 cfs, .79 feet, compared to median flow of 79 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 36.2 cfs, 2.21 feet, which compares to median flow of 42 cfs. The water temperature is 61.5 degrees.
Of the streams that have USGS gauge sites, most streams are flowing near normal except Little River.
The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish higher where the water is cooler. Look for water temps in the 60’s.
The streams are flowing low. The trout are hidden in riffles, pockets, plunge pools and near cover. Stealth is essential to your success. Dress to blend with the forest, wade as little as possible and use fine tippet.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. I would use terrestrials.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and other warmwater species can be caught, but I would go early or late when the sun is off the water. I would use foam floating flies and cast to the shaded banks or where riffles enter pools.
Lake fishing will be best early or late when the sun is off the water. Foam floating flies, poppers, streamers or Dragons are what I would use.
There are many breaks in generation at the TVA and Corps dams today. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
Today, I will be putting out many new fly tying materials in the department, focusing mainly on midges. We have many new smaller tinsels in several colors, that are perfect for tying midge bodies. Additionally, I ordered every color of Ultra Thread 70 denier, that we have not stocked before. They will be out on the displays later this morning. The fly tying department looks better than ever before.
Fly Tyers Weekend will be here before we know it. This free event will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 2nd and 3rd. It will be held in the conference center at Tremont Lodge.
