Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:15 am, the temperature outside is 71.2 degrees.
The high temperature in Townsend was 93.6 degrees yesterday, while at the Knoxville Airport, the high topped out at 92 degrees. That was a record for this date, last set in 1998 at 90 degrees. Normal for the date is a high of 78 and a low of 56.
Today and tomorrow will be hot, with highs in the upper 80’s to low 90’s. We have a chance for afternoon thunderstorms today, and a slight chance tomorrow.
Cooler temperature are predicted late next week. Week after next, temps should be much closer to normal.
Little River is flowing at 34.4 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.17 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 90 cfs.
It rained in the Tellico River watershed yesterday. Flow there is 60 cfs, .67 feet, compared to median flow of 77 cfs.
Otherwise, all streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauges are flowing very low this morning.
The water is warm in the low elevations at that will be the case for a few days. Fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. One of our Townsend customers hiked several miles yesterday, up Lynn Camp Prong where he found cool water and very good fishing for brook trout.
Trout caught and released in the low elevations, where the water is warm, are stressed and could die. Do the trout a favor and fish higher.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more.
Fly fishing in the lowland rivers for smallmouth bass, rock bass and sunfishes is probably fair at best. Use poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or nymphs. Go early or late. The same is true when fly fishing on the lakes.
Fishing on a tailwater might be a good option today. There are angler friendly generation schedules on some tailwaters in the region. Take a look at the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
Townsend will be hopping today. The Fall festivals are drawing good crowds, despite the heat. Check out all of the activities at the Visitors Center, Heritage Center and the Railroad Museum. I noticed a lot of yard sales were held yesterday, at businesses in town.
We are busy at the shop again, following a fairly slow first three weeks in September. A little over a week from now, it will feel more like Fall. Anglers must be preparing for better fishing conditions. And, there are quite a few anglers fishing in the mountains.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
