Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:07 am, the temperature outside is 68.7 degrees.
It is going to be hot today, in the upper 80’s to lower 90’s. There is a slight chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. The heat will remain until next Thursday. Then, we’ll see cooler temperatures as we move further into October.
Little River is flowing at 33.2 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.16 feet on the flow gauge. Median flow for this date is 89 cfs. The water temperature is 72 degrees this morning.
Rain fell yesterday on the North Carolina side of the Smokies. Oconaluftee River, Cataloochee Creek and probably others got a quick rise in water levels. They are receding.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 188 cfs, 1.28 feet, compared to median flow of 217 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 36.2 cfs, which compares to median flow of 42 cfs.
Other streams in the Park that have USGS gauges are flowing low.
Water temperatures are very warm in the low elevations and that will continue for several days. Until we get some relief from the heat, fish the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for temperatures in the 60’s during the day.
Hiding from the trout is still the most important thing you can do to be successful.
Most lowland rivers are probably flowing low. Little River and Little Pigeon River are, for sure. Fishing will be fair at best in these rivers. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and sunfishes can be caught in the deeper pools. Go early or late.
Go early or late on the lakes too. Fish the shaded banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or Rubber Legged Dragons. When the sun shines on the banks, catching fish using shallow water flies is hard to do.
I checked some of the generation schedules on the TVA website. There are fishing opportunities on some of the tailwaters today. Hopefully, you will find a suitable generation schedule and fish on a nice cool tailwater.
Fishing at a high elevation stream, in the shaded backcountry, sounds like a pretty good idea too.
My plan is to receive fly tying orders and re-order for that department today. Our fly tying business has been incredible this month, and all year for that matter. The reason is, I am doing everything I can to keep that department well stocked.
I ordered several Renzetti vises and tools yesterday. They will ship to us tomorrow.
There are some new colors of Ice Dub and I ordered them all. They arrived yesterday and I will put those out today. Ice Dub is extremely popular. The new colors look very interesting. If you are an Ice Dub fan, you probably want to try them.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
