Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:06 am, the temperature outside is 61.2 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 70 degrees. We have a chance for light showers today. Tomorrow will be warmer, with a high near 80 degrees. It will be mostly sunny with a slight chance for showers.
Much cooler conditions will be arriving this weekend. Expect highs in the low 70’s with lows in the low to mid-40’s Saturday and Sunday. We have a chance for more rain Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 29.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.13 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 86 cfs. The water temperature is 69.6 degrees this morning.
Oconaluftee River is rising. Flow is currently 175 cfs, 1.24 feet, compared to median flow of 205 cfs. The water temperature at the Birdtown gauge is 64.8 degrees.
Cataloochee Creek rose overnight but it is now receding. Flow is 42.8 cfs, 2.26 feet, compared to median flow of 43 cfs. The water temperature is 62.1 degrees.
Little Pigeon River, Little River and Tellico River have not been affected by rain since yesterday morning.
Fishing is fair in the Smokies. Cooler water temperatures are on the way. Streams on the North Carolina side of the park are flowing higher than they are here. You should be able to fish in the lower elevation larger streams by the weekend, due to cooler water temperatures.
The trout are hiding in broken water. Stealth is paramount to your success. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more fish. Dress to blend with the forest and stay low. Dry flies and nymphs will work. The fly patterns you use are not as important as stealth and presentation.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Smallmouth bass and other fishes can be found in the deeper pools.
Today will be a better fishing day on the lakes, thanks to the cloud cover. Fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs and streamers.
There are angler friendly generation schedules at some TVA dams today. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
We were hoping for more rain yesterday than we got. I glanced at the weather radar at times yesterday. It looked like some areas in the Southeast were getting some rain. I hope so. We need rain here and in other states in the east and southwest.
At least it is cooler. Extremely hot, record setting days kept anglers at home in September. We noticed it. Our sales were lower than last September at the shop. Mail order and in-store sales were both slightly below what we saw last September. The first week of October rebounded and was up from last year. Year to date, we are up quite a bit.
The other month that was down from last year was February. Remember all that rain we complained about in February? I would like to be complaining about that right now.
