Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:08 am, the temperature outside is 58.1 degrees.
It will be warm today and tomorrow with high temperatures in the low 80’s, dropping to the mid 50’s tonight and near 60 degrees tomorrow night. There is a low chance for rain through tomorrow.
This weekend will be cooler, with highs in the mid-50’s Saturday and the mid-60’s Sunday. Lows will fall to the mid-40’s Saturday and low-50’s Sunday. There is a 30% to 50% chance for rain Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 30.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.14 feet. That compares to median flow for this date of 79 cfs. The water temperature is 66.7 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 85.6 cfs, 1.13 feet, compared to median flow of 148 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 146 cfs, 1.14 feet, which compares to median flow of 197 cfs. The water temperature is 64.4 degrees at the Birdtown gauge.
Tellico River is flowing at 40.8 cfs, .58 feet, compared to median flow of 72 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 33.6 cfs, 2.19 feet, compared to median flow of 41 cfs. The water temperature is 60.4 degrees.
All streams in the Park that have USGS gauges are flowing below median flow.
Water temperatures are cooling. That is one positive condition for improved fishing. You can fish the lower elevation, larger rivers. And, those temperatures will be falling further over the next two days.
I would use a dry and a dropper. Choose a dry fly you can see well. Stealth and presentation are of the utmost importance to your success. Stay hidden, don’t spook the trout, get a good drift, and you will catch more.
I haven’t heard much good news about lowland river or lake fishing. The rivers are low. Fish the deeper pools, in the shade with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or nymphs.
Some lakes are low and the surface temperatures are still warm. Go early or late when the sun is off the water.
There are opportunities for you to fish a few tailwaters in the region, for trout or smallmouth bass. Check the TVA website to see if you can work with the generation schedules today.
I am having banners made, to direct you to Fly Tyers Weekend and parking for the event. I’ll go to the Lodge today, and decide what sizes we need. They will be made by Tip Signs in Maryville. We’re getting close. Fly Tyers Weekend will be held on November 2nd and 3rd at Tremont Lodge. The event is free. Just show up. Over 50 fly tyers will be demonstrating in shifts throughout the weekend. We have never had that many fly tyers before.
The event will be held indoors, in the two level conference center at the lodge.
This free event is a lot of fun. You will not only learn about fly tying, but you will also learn from these demonstrators about their fly fishing skills and their favorite rivers, lakes and coastal waters.
Early November is usually a wonderful time to be in the Smokies. Please plan to attend. CLICK HERE to learn more.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
